Gerry Godden

Gerry Godden is a ‘Meet and Greet Volunteer’ at St Marys Hospital in Portsmouth

Gerry turned 90 in May this year and his enthusiasm for life and volunteering is vibrant and full of energy. He has been volunteering for Solent NHS Trust for 20 years and he says that he loves his role at St Marys. Gerry has always lived in Portsmouth and his very first volunteering role was as a drummer for the hospital pantomime in 1956.

Before joining the Trust he spent five years volunteering with Portsmouth City Council. Previous to that, he spent 46 years working for the post office. He refers to this time as the experience that turned him from, ‘a boy into a man’

Over the years he has seen many changes, including the transformation of St Mary’s hospital from a bed-based site to a clinical based site. This change meant that he had to begin showing more people around, which he loves!

Gerry admits, that since his wife passed away in 2011, volunteering at St Mary’s hospital gives him a sense of purpose.
